The American River Parkway day kit
The American River Parkway runs for more than 20 miles from Discovery Park to Folsom Lake, and it is one of the best reasons to live in Sacramento. Whether you are biking the Jedediah Smith trail, walking the dog near Watt Avenue or spending an afternoon at the water, a little planning makes the day easier.
Sun and heat
- UV400 sunglasses and a hat. There is not much shade on long stretches of the trail.
- More water than you think you need, especially from June through September.
- Plan rides and walks for the morning or after the Delta breeze arrives in the evening.
For the dog
- A collapsible bowl and extra water.
- Check pavement temperature with the back of your hand before a walk.
- Keep a paw cleaner in the car so the trail stays outside.
In the car
Parking lots along the parkway can be a long way from a gas station. A roadside emergency kit with jumper cables and a portable tire inflator in the trunk means a low tire or weak battery will not end the day.
Leave no trace
Pack out what you bring in, stay on marked trails and keep an eye on river conditions. The water can be cold and fast even on hot days.
